Complete with a list of solo date ideas for you to try taking yourself on this year!
As a woman who has been officially boyfriend-less for the last 4 years, I've become very familiar with solo dates and solo trips. Experiencing life through a single lens has become a part of who I am and I will always highly recommend my fellow single women do the same.
Solo dating is best done with a little self reflection, so let's talk about where you should start if dating yourself is your goal.
Tip #1 - Prep for your solo date
Understanding why you are choosing to date yourself is a great way to mentally prep. What is it that you're trying to work on, if anything? Understanding why can help you continue dating yourself, ultimately bringing you back to a purpose every time you start to fall off.
Reasons for wanting to date yourself can include wanting to feel more comfortable being alone, wanting to improve your relationship with yourself, wanting to utilize your time in a better way or maybe you're fresh out of a relationship and you just want to feel good. Dating ourselves can feel like a reset that we sometimes really need.
Tip #2 - Plan your first solo date
Identify what it is that you like to do, but don't be afraid of trying new things and experimenting. You never know what you might like if you don't try new things. If you enjoy concerts, try a smaller local concert or a live music show. If you like dinner dates, try a cooking class in your city, as these have become increasingly more popular.
You can also use your love language to figure out what you'd enjoy. If you're into physical touch, try something hands on such as a pottery class. If you enjoy acts of service, go flower picking and gift flowers to yourself and for your home. If quality time is your love language, solo dating will be a perfect way to spend that quality time with yourself. Put some money aside and take yourself on a shopping date if you're drawn to receiving gifts. As for words of affirmation, search for a speakeasy or a poetry session. Don't be afraid of trying new things as you plan for your solo dates.
Tip #3 - The solo dating process
Lastly, make your solo date a MOMENT by treating this date with yourself as you would a date with your girls or with your partner. Making this date a moment means doing your hair, makeup and putting on a cute look. It's true that when you look good you feel good, so treat yourself in a way that you'd want to be treated. During this process, set a boundary for how you treat yourself and don't sway from it, as it will raise your requirements for how others treat you.
A few solo date examples include:
Dinner dates
Painting with a Twist
Pottery classes
Candle making classes
Cooking classes
Speakeasies and Open Mic nights
Candlelight concerts
Vineyards
Comedy shows
Drink making classes
Have fun with the journey!
Navigating solo dating can be tough, but it's important for us to develop a healthy relationship with ourselves by working to understand ourselves, planning based on our personal interests and putting effort into the process. Happy solo dating!
